We are stellar matter. We are the universe trying to understand itself - nothing more.

Actually I'm not at all surprised by my fellow Alex's assessment of for loops, because in the electrical engineering / circuit design world, timing is absolutely critical. So if I define a loop in VHDL, I have to know how many clock cycles it will take to execute. If a 'for' loop has a predictable execution that's not a problem, but if you're screwing with the index variable or whatever that makes this task much more difficult.

As far as software is concerned as long as you leave the index variable alone (i.e., don't change it) then I have few problems with creative use of for loops, but in hardware that's a definite no-no.

WARNING! Technical Rant Below.

While talking to Al, he mentioned Engineers being generally more cautious and those with a CS background being more creative. This reminded me of a debate I had with another guy at work (strangely enough, his name is Alex). The other Alex is an Electrical Engineer and he had a pretty interesting view on FOR statements which us CS grads a different view. To demonstrate, take the following code snippet:

for (i=0, j=last; i < j; i++, j--)
{
temp = string[i];
string[i] = string[j];
string[j] = temp;
}

I actually like this bit of code (and I think i actually used it somewhere). It's probably not the most elegant, but no one's ever accused me of being a programming genius. Alex argues the above code is just plain wrong. Although I point out that it works (and is absolutely technically correct), having a "variable" exit condition in a for loop is just plain wrong. "That is not what a FOR loop is meant to do!" he exclaims. If you want to do something like that, you HAVE to use a WHILE so he says. Oh, and he didn't realize that it was possible to have 2 variables in the FOR statement, but considering his other views are you surprised? To compare, this is the same snippet as a while loop:

i=0;
j=last;
while (i < j)
{
temp = string[i];
string[i] = string[j];
string[j] = temp;
i++;
j--;
}

How this is more readable is beyond me. It's longer, the conditions of the loop are scattered all over the place, and it does exact the same thing. Now if you were doing something most complicated (pretty much a given) and this loop extended beyond the physical boundaries of your screen. . . . it's really going to take you longer to figure out what it's doing because you have to take in exactly what every line is doing.

The other point came from the use of this:

for (i=0; i < last; i++)
{
if (string[i] == token)
{
found = true;
break;
}
}

What's the problem here? Well, according to Engineer Alex, it's the break statement in the middle of the FOR loop. That's a major no-no. According to him, a FOR loop MUST execute a fixed number of times. It cannot be variable, have an additional exit condition, look at you funny. . . . He didn't even like it when I suggested that you could do this:

for (i=0; ((i{
if (string[i] == token) found = true;
}

Apparently, any of these task should only be done using a WHILE loop according to the book of Engineer Alex. When can you use a FOR loop? Well, using the guidelines he specified and considering real-world applications. . . NEVER. I just feel so avant garde now! I'm such a coding rebel! :-p

Risk. Pfft.

I imagine the mother of all roleplaying tournaments. A tournament so stupendous, the mere whisper of it's very existence would cleave the universe - in twain. Truly the RPG from which all other RPGs are wrought. It would be akin to rolling 2 D20's on a scale of 1 to awesome, that's how cool it would be.

The Duc's opponents would be called - nay - _culled_ from the four corners of the globe. But that's not all. We're not stoppin there. We're goin all out. I'm talkin Third Earth, Middle Earth, Ye Olde Earthe, The Blue Room. No library too high, no comic shop too low.

With The Duc as DungeonMaster in a game where people's very souls are on the line. Indeed. One Ming. One Ming to rule them all.

Heck, he could hire a Mongol bouncer and name him Great Wall.

G: Is that all? That hardly qualifies as turning the world "on it's head". :) Fact is, Tecmo could have just gotten away with a breast-fest and sold millions. But the funny part is they actually took the time to craft a very good fighting game around the jiggly. Tis why I can't just pass it off. Me upon playing DOA Volleyball. "Wow. They actually threw in a really good volleyball game in addition to the T&A". The new Ninja Gaiden's player models are a direct influence from the already fantastic models used in the DOA series. Besides, "From the maker's of Ninja Gaiden comes Ninja Gaiden" is a bit repetitive.

In other news, Astroboy fucking rocks. Hats off to Sony for making such an awesome show. Wow.

I'm glad you found true love. Me? I'm off to play in the snow tommorow and hope I don't break anything. Rallying is an expensive mistress.

Tiger Woods, by Dan Bern.

I got big balls
Big ol' balls
Big as grapefruits
Big as pumpkins
Yes sir, yes sir
And on my really good days
They swell to the size of small dogs
My balls are as big as small dogs

Well, it ain't braggin' if it's true
Yes sir, yes sir
It ain't braggin' if it's true
Muhammad Ali said that
Back when he was a young man
Back when he was Cassius Clay
Before he fought too many fights
And left his brain inside the ring

And sometimes I wish I was Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods
Sometimes I wish I was Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods

I got a friend whose goal in life
Was to one day go down on Madonna
That's all he wanted
That was all
To one day go down on Madonna
And when my friend was thirty-four
He got his wish in Rome one night
He got to go down on Madonna
In Rome one night in some hotel
And ever since he's been depressed
'Cause life is shiat from here on in
And all our friends just shake their heads
And say too soon, too soon, too soon
He went down on Madonna too soon
Too young, too young, too soon, too soon

And it ain't braggin' if it's true
Yes sir, yes sir
It ain't braggin' if it's true
Muhammad Ali said that
Back when he was Cassius Clay
Before he fought too many fights
And left his brain inside the ring

And sometimes I wish I was Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods
Sometimes I wish I was Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods, Tiger Woods

If certain girls don't look at you
It means that they like you a lot
If other girls don't look at you
It just means they're ignoring you
How can you know, how can you know?
Which is which, who's doing what?
I guess that you can ask 'em
Which one are you baby?
Do you like me or are you ignoring me?
Do you like me or are you ignoring me?
Do you like me or are you ignoring me?
And all you need to do that
Is one good pair of big balls
Balls as big as grapefruits
Balls as big as pumpkins
Balls as big as mine

But even though my balls are big
Sometimes I wish they were bigger
Even bigger
Big as the wheels on tractors
Big as the golden arches
Big as the Golden Gate Bridge
Big as the state of Kansas
Big as Mars and Jupiter
Big as the swing of Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods
Tiger Woods

What has The Duc been cookin?

I've been pretty busy lately. The big chunk of my time away from work is spent at the arena. I'm on the ice about 4-5 times a week playing hockey. I've been playing in two leagues plus some pick-up. It's been pretty tiring, but the season is almost over. I think going back to playing once or twice a week during the Summer will be a nice change.

Other than that, I've been busy doing stuff around the house. Cleaned out all the junk that was in my living room. Then I started working on restructuring my little computer network. Finally got my Windows XP box to finally talk to my Linux box via Samba. Trying to figure out what computer a particular file is stored on tends to be a problem when you have 5 computers, I finally got the old PIII-450 setup as a file server and moved all my data onto that. Got around to moving the new computer into my room, exchanged the old router for a WiFi router, and got a cheap USB WiFi adapter to get it connected to my little network. Damn USB devices, I've been trying to sort out some reliability issues with the WiFi adapter. . . . I think I have it working now, but I've said that a few times last week too. Realized the other day that my Win XP box was underclocked. . . tried fixing that (what a disaster!) The machine was completely unstable and crashing for a while. Finally got the correct BIOS settings after a few hours. Managed to get the thing to work in dual-channel mode (it's really sweet now!) Next move, finish setting up the computer in my room and get Linux working on it with the network.

Greg: I'm currenting working under the Millitary product line and I am working on a project that is destined for Tampa. I'm not sure if it's the project that you heard about though and if I did know, I'm not sure if I am privy to tell you. All I can say is what I'm working on is pretty cool.

Aside from trying to save enough money to pay my bills, not much else has been happening.

I think in the early 90s Disney did own the Jim Henson studio, before they sold it to some German company. This wasn't too bad, actually, this is when they made the show Dinosaurs, which IMO is very underrated.

Unfortunately Disney has lost its soul long ago, and will probably just use the property to churn out many mindless sequels like they do with Winnie the Pooh. On the other hand, if they come out with something as good as Dinosaurs again, it's better than nothing.

G: Put it this way, let's say that you are an honest, hardworking engineer who gets paid based on how close to the top of the pile of engineers ou are. Then they find out that doing Meth increases your ability to use AutoCAD, but it can also very likely kill you., and definitely has some very serious side effects.

Now let's say that enough engineers start doing the drug thing, and they overcrowd the rest to the point where the abstainers can't make a living as engineers anymore. Perhaps he'd be tempted to join the crowd, but has a family to worry about, and would like to live to see his grandchildren, etc.

See the parallel now?

Anyway, when robots start playing baseball I'll certainly watch, but people playing will still be interesting as well.

A pretty interesting outline of the key personality traits common to 'hackers' (in the proper, positive sense of the term) gathered from within the community of self-identifying hackers themselves. As with any such generalization it really doesn't fit any one particular person, but I found I identified with quite a bit of it. The Jargon File is itself a fun binge-reading session.

Binnie's Recipe Corner - Potato Leek Soup

Ingredients

*2 tablespoons of butter ( I used olive oil)
* pound of leeks, sliced and washed. (that is about 3 large leeks, 4 small ones)
*1 pounds of potatoes (depending on the potatoes 4-7)
*2 cups of veggie stock or water, (it would probably work with chicken or beef if you prefer.
* 2 cups of milk. (skim works as well as whole or anything in the middle) if you dont want to use milk just substitute with additional stock
*1 teaspoon of salt. (I never use this because of the stock)
*peper to taste
*pasley to taste

If you want you can add carrots or garlic. I have tried it and they taste good too.

saut the leeks in butter for 8-10 minutes

add potatoes, stock (and any other veggies you want) bring to a boil, lower heat and allow to simmer for 30 minutes or until the veggies have gone soft. add 2 cups of milk and simmer for 10 more minutes.

The Duc says this: Kiddy Grade is not H. The Duc sees no tenticles or graphical depictions. Getting caught buying Hentai is shameful. Especially when one can freely download Hentai in the comfort of one's home.

So it turns out that the guy who is responsible for the new re-branded look of Mozilla's FireFox Browser is someone I went to high school with. He also has a pretty good blog.

PS. FireFox kicks ass, popup-blocking, faster than IE, no stupid clickity sound, and no mysterious spyware programs installing themselves onto your computer while you're not looking.

Exactly how the fuck is making fun of French people racist? Since when are the French a race? As silly as the whole concept of race is. I've been watching it on Star TV cause I missed the 1st show so I've been a day behind. So what did they go and do?

CHUM Television, which carries the show in Ontario, expressed regrets and said it was excising the Triumph sketch from the Friday night re-broadcast on Star, its national channel.

Sigh. Annoyed I am.

Read it on Canoe, don't even get me started. He's freaking Triumph, he rips on everyone and damn funny doin it. 1st 2 shows = it's ok to bash Yankees, but God forbid should you mess with le French.

Yeah, but when THE ONE AND ONLY DUC is all you get on google, that's impressive.

My new plan for world domination is two fold: I will create the Wang Party of Canada. Gregory will start the Connie Chung Coalition. After a period of petty squabling, we will set aside our differences and "unite the right".

So like there's this competition for 'president of the Internet'. The rules are, whoever gets the highest rank on google for the phrase 'president of the internet' wins. So if other people link to you, and say 'president of the Internet' in their links then it helps your ranking. Since my being the #1 result for al o'neill, I don't need this honour, so I think I'll help out the cause of this guy:

The Duc, Gregory, commence salivating:

Shooting of Initial D is being delayed due to conflicts between Tsui Hark and Media Asia Group. Firstly, there is a disparity of some HK$10 million between the two's proposals on the production budget. Tsui Hark wants the movie to be as grandiloquent as possible and to film the car races on actual locations - primarily Japan and Europe - as depicted in the comics. However, this would require a hefty budget which Media Asia Group is loath to fork out. Secondly, the script is heading in two directions. Media Asia Group wants the movie to be commercially viable, while Tsui Hark insists on making it according to his filming language and style. Thirdly, while they are basically in agreement on the male cast Jay Chou, Edison Chan, Shawn Yue and Anthony Wong, they are again in dissent on the female lead. Owing to many disputes, the studio decided to push shooting from February to March, with no date fixed, contingent on how the issue develops. Media Asia Group declined comment on what it would do should the controversies remain unresolved, but some top-dog from it privately revealed that the director would be changed if the worst comes to the worst.

Almost forgot, Sony did build the everything machine, the PSX. It was released during Xmas in Japan and flopped. Better luck next time. Nintendo and MS (see! I didn't replace the S with a dollar sign), won't be sharing the same hardware as Nintendo. Both companies are control freaks, Nintendo moreso. And unlike Sega, Nintendo has no debt, so they'll be playing with their own ball for a little while yet. They managed to capture the #2 spot over the holidays.

That being said I haven't got my game on in awhile. Stupid drought. But what I can offer is... The nerdiest car - ever.

A lot of jockeying for position at the moment. Xbox Next specs change depending on who you ask. Same thing happened with the Xbox and then they changed spec a little before launch. I'm more curious about Nintendo's dual screen portable they're putting out. Methinks it'll flop but who knows? At least they're not Nokia.

Going through many "console wars" before, specs matter not 'cept to the hardcore. Marketing rules supreme. It's not about the guts it's about the games, and the number of triple A developers you can woo. And so I end my gaming blurb with a little something from the folks that brought you Transformers - Beer Bot!

By TVT - 7:44 p.m. | (0) comments | Post a Comment

Judging by the newly-leaked specs for XBox 2, with a little tweaking it could probably be made to run Mac OS X. IBM G5-class processor, ATI graphics, blah blah.. My bet is Nintendo and MS are going to have a single underlying hardware platform / suppliers, with Nintendo making a slimmer, pure-gaming machine and MS going after the media centre market, while Sony tries to go it alone and build the everything machine on totally in-house technology.
