Server Back Up

Wow... that was an adventure. I took the server down around 1:00am and installed Ubuntu Server 6.06. The server isn't fully functional yet, but the web services and all the web content has been restored which is all this site really uses. The rest of the work is mostly services I use on my LAN. The server might be down for short periods of time as I finish reconstructing the server and do a post-install backup, however the big outage is over with.

Working with Ubuntu is a bit strange especially when I've been using Mandrake and Red Hat Linux for 6+ years. So far, I've found things I like about it and stuff I'm not too keen on. I'll see how the rest of the reconstruction work goes, but if I can't get things working the way I want, then I might try Fedora Core 6 or Mandriva.

I figured you'd have gone down the road of Debian or BSD snobbery long ago.

Oh, come on. I'm not that much of a snob. A bit elitist :-p, but not a complete snob.

All the places I've worked at used Red Hat, not much of a choice there. I've used Mandrake mainly because it works and I've been using it for years.

I got most of the services back up and running now. I've managed to get everything up and running using the shell since I don't have X. The server's looking good so far.

The UPS actually works properly now, which is the biggest reasons for the whole upgrade so I'm happy.

I still have to restore the home directories, but that's more tedious than challenging. After that, it's just nicities and cleaning up stuff I've been meaning to get around to.

Ubuntu ftw!

Seriously, it's a damn fine distro, and most everything just works. It's fantastic.
