Marc (course director for American 2600) made an excellent point about Canada/US relations: the old standing invitation for Canada to join the States has never been played up because American Republicans are well aware of how relatively left our country leans.
That's why I think the Republican answer to the 'statehood for DC' movement is to hvae Washington, DC join Maryland instead of the geographically more obvious Virginia. Can't have a blue state in Dixie, after all.
