Globetechnology: "Blue LEDs are much more complicated to design and produce than red, green or orange LEDs, and until recently that made them expensive. But prices have crashed in recent months, and you'll now find blue LEDs tarting up every conceivable type of consumer electronics device."

Science & Technology at Scientific American.com: Blue Chip -- Shuji Nakamura beat the titans to blue LEDs and lasers, potentially revolutionizing lighting and data storage.

One of my FPGA boards has a couple of insanely bright blue LEDs that light up the entire lab when the lights are out. I've programmed them to alternately pulse whenever I have email.
