BBC NEWS | Technology | Nintendo 'fears for games industry': "[Nintendo president Iwata] said he wanted the DS to be a return to the simplicity of the two-button console, which Nintendo pioneered.

"What we have come up with as the answer is to change how you feel and touch with the console.

"We have to radically change the whole structure of how the game is played." "

It's amusing that they remedied the button layout by adding 4 face buttons. Y'know. So we the lowly gaming public can play the SNES ports and remakes that they churn out. Instead of being forced into lame ass control schemes to compensate for 2 face buttons on the GBA.

Regarding the DS. I fear for Nintendo. This has happened before and it will happen again. Nintendo, the 1st party with the talent will get the DS *right*. 2nd party, not so much. 3rd party will throw a map up on the screen and call it revolutionary.

3rd party almost never gets new Nintendo hardware right until it's too late. I've seen it with the N64, Cube + GBA connectivity, and GBA + card reader. Only the big N gets it right cause well, they built it. And that will get you 2nd place tops.

Their "we're only a gaming company" approach is admirable. It really is. But these days, we want so much more.
